On May 3, 2009, we got an email from a young college student about a possible internship. We were the brand new parents of Jack at that time, and were feeling completely overwhelmed by parenthood, work, managing a studio, and honestly…just life in general.
Here is a little of what she wrote:
“Mr. & Mrs. Bamber,
My name is Sarah Becker & I attend Bryan College. I spoke with Dr. H about possibly interning with Bamber Photography when I realized this week that a couple of my friends had interned with you last year – many times have I lingered in front of your studio while walking Dayton. Dr. H told me that last year was a bit hectic with you being pregnant & building a house, etc., & that you wanted to take a break from having interns this upcoming year. That is completely understandable!
Still, I wanted to email you and ask if that is still the case. I’ve been a photographer for a little over a year now, & would love the opportunity to learn more in-studio, weddings, and engagement photography…”
John emailed her back literally 2 minutes later asking her if she was available the next day to assist him with a shoot.
The rest is history, that student (Sarah) has transformed from intern, to studio manager, to lead photographer, and most importantly she is an integral part of our family, and someone who we both consider our ‘little sister!’ Sarah visits our house so frequently that Jack doesn’t even think of her as a guest in our home. She not only works for Bamber Photography and Motion Picture Co, but she also house-sits, baby-sits, helps me in our church nursery, drops things off at the post office, and takes her amazing smile and personality wherever she goes. Words are honestly failing me as I think back over these past 3 years that we have watched Sarah’s confidence grow as a professional photographer, and (not to sound cheesy), we are so proud and honored to have her as a part of both our business and our lives.
So tomorrow — 3 years + 1 day after that very first email — we’re so honored to be present as she marries Luke on our family’s land. I know it will be emotional, after watching her grow all of these years, and now watching her walk down that aisle. Who knows — maybe even John will drop a tear or two! 🙂
