Let them eat cake

It’s no secret that John and I love cake! For our own wedding, it was the one of our top priorities. We wanted the cake to not only look pretty, but taste amazing! We’ve seen a lot of wedding cakes over the years but these are a few that stood out among the rest.

Dessert Designs by Leland

The bride had her cake bakery selected before she even met her groom…and what a cake it was! A 5 Tiered cake with sugar flowers made quite a statement.

From the Bride: This is the only thing that I have ever really known about my wedding since I was a kid. It is sure to be one of the most amazing cakes you have ever seen and it tastes just as good as it looks.

Cup-A-Dee Cakes

The couple chose a custom Art-Deco style for their wedding cake coupling modern architecture with southern tradition overlooking the Tennessee River.

Sweet Eats Bakery

From the Baker, Jennifer: The gorgeous floral cake was a classic with a twist, Vanilla Cake and Vanilla Sweet Cream Buttercream icing. This cake has more of a modern structure while remaining simple and stunning. A large barrel bottom tier with a single layer middle tier and double layer top tier. The cake has more of a spackled texture icing except for the middle tier which was pearled icing design. I used a linen look ribbon to finish off the edges and what really makes the design is the arrangement of the pink hues in the flowers and the different greenery.

Couture Cakes

From the Bride: “The custom cakes were from Couture Cakes and Confections and were pieces of art but equally delicious. The bride’s cake was a multi-tiered amaretto flavored cake with raspberry interlaced throughout, butter cream icing and designed with a combination of lace icing to replicate my gown and had our new family crest and included a touch of nature with sugar-poured, hand designed leaves. The groom’s cake was inspired by his alma mater, the University of Mississippi, with the “Walk of Champions” and “The Grove” famous for its football tailgates. Couture Cakes incorporated Brent’s favorite tailgating treats, all edible cake, under the tent — George Dickel Whiskey, Wise Acre Beer, and Corn Dogs.”

Frosted Pumpkin

Celebrating 77 combined years of marriage.

From the Bride: Instead of just placing pictures of our parents on their wedding day at the reception, I wanted to make small replicas of their wedding cakes to display next to our wedding cake. I LOVE the way it turned out! I sent the pictures of their cakes to Frosted Pumpkin and he nailed it. We put pictures of them cutting their cakes next to their replica cakes. It was a big hit! Together, our parents have been married for over 77 years, and we thought this was a special way to honor them at our wedding.

B’s Sweets

From the Bride:Our cake was Italian Cream since we were had Italian food, and it’s one of our favorite flavors! I knew I wanted a smooth texture and butter cream icing, not fondant, because I wanted the sparkle to really be the focal point. I wanted the bride’s cake to be topped with my Miss Tennessee 2009 crown. The crown symbolized a time in my life when I was able to serve the state of Tennessee on behalf of Governor Bredeson’s Character Education Program, meet incredible and new people everyday, and be a voice for Ronald McDonald House Charities. That year brought countless blessings, allowed me to continue my education through the scholarship earnings, and opened many doors for me personally and professionally. Most of the people in attendance at our wedding were a part of my journey that year, and I couldn’t have done it without their endless love and support!

We cut the cake with Kevin’s Officer Saber, which is a military wedding tradition that we always wanted to incorporate into our reception. So many aspects of the day and the details were unique to us and the things that are a special part of our lives.

Sweet Eats

This gorgeous cake designed by Jennifer Hooper at Sweet Eats Bakery is a butter cream spice cake. More from Jennifer:  I love the simplicity of this cake. For the naked cake design, the cake flavor was Spiced Cake with cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Brown Sugar Buttercream icing topped with fresh Mission Figs. As I was making this cake I really thought it was the best of both worlds for icing lovers and cake lovers. Just enough of each to make everyone smile! It’s very simple, but makes a bold statement and because of this aspect it remains one of the most popular designs people request for weddings to date. There is something so perfect about a naked cake.

Momofuku Milk Bar

The cake was from Momofuku Milk Bar, one of our favorite bakeries in New York and a nod to our current home. An ice cream cake is perfect for a summer wedding!

Magpies

This cake has long been one of our absolute favorites. Classic vanilla buttercake filled with vanilla buttercream wrapped & finished in smooth Swiss buttercream. Gorgeous fondant with a simple white and green color scheme make this cake stand out. It has beautiful symmetry and a timeless style.

Cakes by Megan

From the Bride: “Our cake was buttercream with mixed berries. Since we served a heavier entree, Jordan and I wanted to have a lighter cake. Strawberries are my favorite fruit and also represent a huge piece of home to me (thanks to the Strawberry Festival!) so I wanted to make sure they were included in the mixed berry filling. My mammaw, my mother’s mom, passed away when I was in college, and she always used to make strawberry shortcake for family gatherings. I often make and serve her recipe when we entertain at our home, so having strawberries in the cake was also a subtle way to honor her memory.

Jordan’s mother was so gracious to take care of our cake, so we made tastings a family affair. His mother and grandmother drove down from Pennyslvania to join Jordan and me in sampling MANY cakes. It was one of my favorite parts of wedding planning because I loved spending that time with our family and making the decision together.

I knew I wanted a large bow and a simple, Kate Spade-inspired design. I told Megan what I envisioned and she sketched out the design right then – we were blown away! My wedding shoes were Kate Spade and – it sounds silly now – many of the design elements of our wedding day were inspired by my shoes. Our wedding planner suggested a rosegold sparkly cake table linen to match the shoes and compliment our cake, and we were so pleased with how it turned out.”

The Bake Shoppe

Matt’s favorite cake flavor is strawberry with cream cheese icing, and that was one of his few requests when it came to wedding planning!  We wanted a cake that was not too fussy and did not require fondant.  We looked for something that could be made pretty with cream cheese icing and could incorporate lots of fresh flowers, which I love.  We liked the simple petaled icing pattern and the stacks of flowers in between.  The pink color of the strawberry cake happened to go along with the wedding colors too!  The Bake Shoppe did a wonderful job with the cake, and Fresh by CarryAnn added the flowers to it.

Gabriel’s Bakery

From the Bride: The cake was a strawberry cake from a bakery in Marietta Georgia – Gabriel’s.  Will and I both love Gabriel’s strawberry cake and growing up my family always had it for special occasions. I also wanted to include a silhouette of my dog, Wally because he is such a big part of our life together! Will gave him to me the Christmas before we got engaged and then used him when he proposed later that year.
